Driving Tests
Advice
Your test will be cancelled and you will not get your money back if you do not take these with you.
What You Need To Take
your UK driving licence – no other form of ID is accepted
a car – most people use their driving instructor’s, but you can use your own car if it meets the rules
Using your own car for the driving test
If you’re planning on taking the test in your own car, it must:
be taxed
be insured for a driving test (check with your insurance company)
be roadworthy and have a current MOT (if it’s over 3 years old)
have no warning lights showing
Check the full list of rules the car must meet at https://www.gov.uk/driving-test/using-your-own-car.
Are you ready to pass?
You’ll usually be ready to take your driving test when:
You do not need prompts from your driving instructor.
You do not make silly mistakes that are dangerous or potentially dangerous when you’re driving.
You can pass mock driving tests.
You can control your nerves.
Your driving instructor agrees you’re ready.
Practising with family or friends
Getting more experience of driving between your driving lessons is a great way to help you prepare for your driving test.
If it’s possible, we recommend that you practise driving with family or friends between your driving lessons.
Help for the person supervising you
To help the person supervising you, we’ve published a new guide which is packed full of advice and tips. Please ask them to read this guide.
Advice
Top 3 tips to make the most of your practice sessions
Tell your driving instructor that you intend to do private practice when you reach a suitable level. They can then help you prepare.
Ask the person who will be supervising you to sit in on one of your driving lessons. This will help them know how to supervise you.
Keep track of your progress. Use our record sheet to monitor what you cover and any concerns you have: https://www.gov.uk/dvsa/record-private-driving-practice.
